Support Worker Continuity and Backup Planning

A good worker relationship can take time to build. Continuity matters because the participant should not need to repeatedly explain routines, communication or goals. At the same time, no ethical provider should promise that one person will never be unavailable.

Questions to discuss before support begins

When a match needs adjustment

A mismatch does not mean the participant has failed. Communication style, pace, boundaries, interests or practical availability may not fit. Feedback should be listened to, documented and used to decide whether coaching, a changed approach or a different worker is appropriate and available.

Planning for leave and unexpected absence

The service agreement and onboarding conversation should explain notice, cancellations, replacement options and how urgent changes are communicated. Replacement support depends on worker availability and suitability; it should never be assumed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I request the same worker for regular shifts?

You can state that continuity is important. Confirmation depends on roster sustainability and the worker remaining suitable and available.

Will a replacement automatically attend?

Not necessarily. The participant’s preferences and the safety and suitability of any replacement should be considered.

What if I am unhappy with a worker?

Raise the concern with Access4All through your preferred communication channel. You may also use the complaints and feedback process. Immediate safety concerns should be handled through the appropriate emergency or safeguarding pathway.

Official guidance: Read the NDIS information about working with a support worker and the NDIS Commission’s participant guide to finding and managing supports. Access4All’s information is general and does not replace advice about an individual plan.
