Finding NDIS Support for a Family Member

Looking for support for a son, daughter or other family member can feel difficult, especially when the person is an adult and several people are involved in decisions. A good first conversation should clarify the participant’s wishes, who is authorised to act, what help is needed and what would make support feel comfortable.

Before contacting a provider

For young adults aged 18 to 35

Parents and guardians may hold valuable knowledge, but adulthood does not remove the participant’s right to choice, privacy and involvement. We clarify consent or authority and ask how the young adult wants family included. Support can then focus on practical goals such as community routines, shopping, appointments, recreation, communication and greater independence.

An example first enquiry

“My adult daughter lives in Spearwood and would like regular support on Tuesday afternoons to shop, attend swimming and become more confident in the community. She prefers calm, direct communication and wants to meet a possible worker before agreeing to ongoing shifts.”

This is an illustrative example, not a participant testimonial. It gives enough information to check likely fit without sharing unnecessary private records.

What happens after the enquiry?

  1. We review the requested service, location, schedule and matching preferences.
  2. We explain whether we appear to have suitable capacity or need more information.
  3. If both sides wish to continue, onboarding covers consent, goals, risks, funding, service terms and the proposed worker arrangement.
  4. Support starts only after suitability and required agreements are confirmed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enquire for my adult child?

Yes. We will clarify your role, authority or consent and how the participant wants to be involved.

Do I need to know the NDIS item number first?

No. Begin with the support the participant wants. Funding and service details can be checked before an agreement is made.

Is the first conversation free?

Yes. The initial capacity and suitability conversation is free and does not require the participant to proceed.

Official guidance: Read the NDIS information about working with a support worker and the NDIS Commission’s participant guide to finding and managing supports. Access4All’s information is general and does not replace advice about an individual plan.
