Choosing a support worker is not only about finding a provider that lists your suburb. A useful match must work in real life: the right days and times, appropriate skills, communication that feels respectful, clear costs and a shared understanding of what support should achieve.
A practical support-worker matching checklist
- Exact availability: Ask whether a suitable worker is available for the recurring schedule and shift length you need, not only whether the provider “services” your suburb.
- Participant preferences: Discuss communication, culture, language, gender preferences, age-related interests, sensory needs, routines and how the participant makes choices.
- Skills and safeguards: Explain the actual tasks and risks. Ask how the provider selects workers, supervises practice and applies worker-screening requirements.
- Community and transport: Confirm destinations, vehicle or public-transport arrangements, travel charges, activity costs and what is included in the shift.
- Continuity: Ask what happens during leave, illness or a poor match, and how changes will be communicated.
- Feedback and complaints: The participant should know how to raise a concern, request a different approach or make a complaint without fear of losing support.
Questions to ask before saying yes
- Who is likely to provide the regular shifts, and can we speak before the first ongoing service?
- What experience is relevant to this participant’s goals and support needs?
- How will instructions, risks, preferences and changes be recorded?
- Which charges, notice periods and cancellation rules will appear in the service agreement?
- How do you protect privacy and involve family or professionals only with appropriate consent?
- How will we review whether the support is still useful?
What to tell Access4All
Start with the suburb, support type, preferred days and times, desired start date and the qualities that matter in a worker. For an initial conversation, do not send full medical records. If there may be a suitable match, we will explain what information is needed next.
Frequently asked questions
Does being a registered NDIS provider guarantee a suitable match?
No. Registration is important, but suitability also depends on the participant’s needs, worker capability, schedule and the quality of the relationship.
Can the participant ask to change workers?
Participants have choice and control. The process, notice and available alternatives should be discussed with the provider and reflected in the service agreement.
Should I compare more than one provider?
You may compare providers and ask the same practical questions. A clear provider should be willing to explain capacity, costs, safeguards and limitations without pressure.
Official guidance: Read the NDIS information about working with a support worker and the NDIS Commission’s participant guide to finding and managing supports. Access4All’s information is general and does not replace advice about an individual plan.
